The previously announced closure of the Oakhill Road/Sashabaw Road intersection, on the Independence Twp/Brandon Twp. border, has been delayed until Sept. 7 due to a utility issue. The intersection had previously been planned to close Sept. 1
The closure is necessary as part of the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) project to construct a compact roundabout at the intersection. The compact roundabout will enhance the safety and traffic flow at the intersection.
Work is expected to finish, and the intersection to re-open, in mid-November. Access to homes and businesses near the intersection will be maintained at all times during the project.
Once the intersection is closed, the detour route for Sashabaw Road through traffic will be Seymour Lake Road to Baldwin Road to Clarkston Road, back to Sashabaw Road and vice versa. The detour for Oakhill Road through traffic will be Perry Lake Road to Seymour Lake Road to Dartmouth Road, back to Oakhill Road and vice versa.
The project is expected to cost approximately $1.23 million. Fifty percent of the cost is funded through a federal safety grant. The remainder will be paid for by RCOC.
The project includes:
- Replacement of current four-way-stop intersection with a compact roundabout
- Reconstruction of one-third mile of roadway with asphalt
- Installation of new curbs and gutters
- Installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant crosswalks
- Installation of storm sewers
- Improvement to drainage
- Installation of intersection lighting
The contractor for the project is Angelo Iafrate Construction Company of Warren. The
Oakhill/Sashabaw intersection carries approximately 12,890 vehicles daily.
