Five state legislators representing Oakland County recently signed a special tribute honoring Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) employees for their roles as essential workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our employees are essential workers, and we didn’t miss a beat during this crisis. We have kept the roads safe for the other essential workers,” stated RCOC Chairman Greg Jamian. “This honors and acknowledges our employees who worked so hard,” he added.

The State of Michigan Special Tribute was dated Dec. 2 and signed by state Representatives Christine Greig, Jim Ellison, Robert Wittenberg, Mari Manoogian and Padma Kuppa.

The tribute reads, in part: “This document is signed and dedicated to honor and commend the Road Commission for Oakland County, and its workers and staff, as the state’s premier road agency.” It also thanks RCOC staff for “all they have done maintaining the county’s road infrastructure during the coronavirus pandemic.”

“This memorializes what we went through this year, which was hell,” Jamian said. He presented the tribute to Managing Director Dennis Kolar at the Dec. 10 RCOC Board meeting.

Jamian added that road workers are not thought of by some as essential workers. But, he pointed out, the state recognizes them as such.

“Had RCOC’s staff not continued to do what they do throughout the pandemic,” he explained, “all the other essential workers, including doctors, nurses, EMS technicians, grocery story employees, etc., would not have been able to get to their jobs. Our employees take their role very seriously, and that has been evident by the fact that we have never stopped doing what we do or reduced the level of service we provide despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. I am extremely proud of the RCOC staff.”

Jamian also thanked the legislators for recognizing the Road Commission staff. “I am very appreciative that these legislators took the time out of their busy schedules to acknowledge what the Road Commission employees have done,” he stated.
