The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will close eastbound Maple Road between Drake and Farmington roads in West Bloomfield Township beginning July 18 for the first phase of a two-year road construction project.
The westbound lane of Maple Road between Drake and Farmington will remain open to traffic. Access to Henry Ford Hospital, businesses and residential property will be maintained throughout the project.
The detour for eastbound traffic is Drake Road to Walnut Lake Road to Farmington Road, back to Maple Road and vice versa.
Motorists can expect heavy delays, and westbound through traffic is advised to use the detour so emergency access to the hospital can be maintained.
The approximately $6.4 million project is funded with a mix of federal and local dollars. Local funding is shared by RCOC, West Bloomfield Township and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).
The two-year, 1.8 mile project includes:
• Rehabilitation and resurfacing of Maple Road from Drake to Orchard Lake Road
• Addition of a continuous center, left-turn lane
• Right-turn lane extensions in several areas
• Paved shoulder widenings
• Improved drainage
• Curb and gutter installation
• Traffic signal modernization
• Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian crosswalks
Work on the Farmington/Maple Road roundabout will also be done during the first phase. The roundabout will remain open to traffic. The first phase is expected to be completed in late November.
During the second phase, scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017, the section of Maple between Farmington and Orchard Lake roads will be closed for eastbound traffic but open for westbound traffic.
RCOC has worked with West Bloomfield Township first responders and officials to ensure emergency vehicles are able to use Maple Road to access Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. This was the main reason for keeping the westbound lane open.
The contractor for the project is Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township.
Maple Road carries approximately 28,000 vehicles daily.
