The contractor for the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) Baldwin Road project today (Friday, Dec. 13) opened Maybee Road between Baldwin Road and Rohr Road in Orion Twp.
The road had been closed at the west side of the Baldwin intersection since July as the part of the ongoing Baldwin Road reconstruction project from Morgan to Waldon. The section of Maybee Road closest to Baldwin Road was reconstructed and a hill reduced just west of Baldwin Road as part of the Baldwin Road project. The hill reduction provides improved sight distance for motorists on the road.
The contractor will have to close this section of Maybee again in 2020 to complete work on the road. The schedule for that closure has not yet been determined.
The Maybee/Baldwin intersection was reconstructed and reconfigured to accommodate the new four-lane boulevard that is being constructed on this section of Baldwin. The multi-year $50 million Baldwin project is transforming the road from two lanes into a combination of four-lane boulevard and five lanes and includes the construction of five roundabouts.
The Baldwin project is being constructed by Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township and is a partnership between RCOC and Orion Township.
“We appreciate the patience of the motorists and businesses as the contractor finished this critical element of the Baldwin project,” Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett said. “We also appreciate all the effort that contractor Dan’s Excavating has put into getting this intersection open as quickly as possible.”
