The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will begin the modernization of 10 traffic signal and crosswalk-signal locations on 12 Mile Road from east of Woodward Avenue (M-1) to Connecticut Avenue (just west of Campbell Road) in Royal Oak beginning today, Monday, Oct. 21.
12 Mile Road will remain open to traffic throughout the project. During this first phase of the project, work will mostly be done on underground infrastructure and require periodic lane closures.
In 2020, new traffic signals, poles/mast arms, street lighting improvements and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks will be constructed.
The following intersections/crosswalks on 12 Mile Road will be involved with the modernization project:
- Shrine of the Little Flower (pedestrian signal and crosswalk)
- Northwood Elementary School (pedestrian signal and crosswalk)
- Vinsetta Blvd. west of CN Railroad bridge
- Vinsetta Blvd. east of CN Railroad bridge
- Crooks Road
- Main Street
- Rochester Road
- Fern Street
- Altadena Avenue
- Connecticut Avenue
The approximate cost for the project is $1.9 million. The project is mostly funded ($1.75 million) through federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds. The remainder is split between RCOC and the City of Royal Oak.
The contractor for the project is Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township.
