The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) has installed a work zone camera that is now providing a real-time view of the construction of the roundabout at the Adams Road/Gunn Road intersection in Oakland Township.
Viewers can watch the progress of the construction on the RCOC website (www.rcocweb.org -- click on the “Adams/Gunn Construction Work Zone Camera” link in the “Helpful Links” section at the bottom of the home page). Site visitors can view photos of the project or a time-lapse series that combines all photos taken in succession.
The camera takes a photo every 15 minutes between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. RCOC will produce a compilation of all photos following the completion of the project.
The construction of the roundabout began June 17 and will be completed approximately Aug. 31. During construction, the intersection is closed to all traffic.
The roundabout will contain two lanes for Adams Road traffic and one lane for Gunn Road traffic. The project also includes the installation of curbs, gutters and drainage improvements. High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian-crossing beacons will be installed at the pedestrian crosswalks on the north leg of the roundabout.
This project is expected to cost approximately $2 million, with $600,000 funded through a federal safety grant. The remaining $1.4 million will be shared by RCOC and Oakland Township. The prime contractor for the project is M.L. Chartier of Fair Haven, MI.
The Adams/Gunn intersection carries about 15,000 vehicles per day. Safety statistics from the Federal Highway Administration document that roundabouts increase traffic capacity by 30 to 50 percent and reduce serious-injury crashes by 75 percent and traffic fatalities by 90 percent.
