MAPLE RD EXPECTED TO CLOSE BETWEEN MIDDLEBELT AND INKSTER ROADS STARTING JUNE 29 FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Beverly Hills, MI – The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to close Maple Road to through traffic beginning Saturday, June 29, from Middlebelt Road to Inkster Road in West Bloomfield Township to replace a culvert that carries the Rouge River under Maple Road. The closure date is weather-dependent and could be changed.

The culvert is located just east of Middlebelt Road. Once the culvert replacement is completed, around Labor Day, RCOC will open Maple east of Middlebelt and close the Maple/Middlebelt intersection to construct a modern roundabout at the intersection.

The culvert replacement portion of the project will include removing and replacing the existing culvert, raising the road surface about six feet to improve sight distance and repaving Maple Road from just east of Middlebelt to just east of the culvert.

During the closure for the culvert replacement, the detour route for Maple Road through traffic will be Inkster Road to 14 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road and back to Maple and vice versa. Access to properties along this section of Maple will be maintained at all times.

When the roundabout-construction portion of the project begins in September, and the Maple/Middlebelt intersection is closed, the detour route for Maple Road through traffic will be Inkster Road to 14 Mile Road to Northwestern Highway to Orchard Lake Road, back to Maple Road and vice versa. The detour route of Middlebelt Road through traffic will be 14 Mile Road to Northwestern Highway to Orchard Lake Road to Walnut Lake Road, back to Middlebelt Road and vice versa.

The roundabout is expected to be open to traffic in November.

The project, including both the roundabout and the culvert replacement, is expected to cost approximately $6.6 million. It will be funded with a mix of federal and local dollars. The local dollars will be shared by RCOC, West Bloomfield Township and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).

The work will be performed by Angelo Iafrate Construction of Warren.
