ADAMS/GUNN ROUNDABOUT PROJECT TO START JUNE 17;
INTERSECTION WILL CLOSE TO TRAFFIC
Beverly Hills, MI – The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with the Charter Township of Oakland, expects to begin work approximately June 17 on the construction of a modern roundabout at the Adams Road/Gunn Road intersection.
The intersection will be closed during construction –through approximately Aug. 31. The start date was coordinated with the end of school (there is an elementary school at the intersection).
The detour route for Adams Road traffic during the closure will be Tienken Road to Rochester Road to Orion Road and back to Adams Road and vice versa.
The detour route for Gunn Road traffic will be Kern Road to Silver Bell Road to Adams Road to Tienken Road to Rochester Road to Orion Road and back to Gunn Road and vice versa.
The roundabout will have two lanes for Adams Road traffic and one lane for Gunn Road traffic. The project also includes the installation of curbs, gutters and drainage improvements. High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian crossing beacons will be installed at the pedestrian crosswalks on the north leg of the roundabout.
This project is expected to cost approximately $2.5 million, with $600,000 funded through a federal safety grant. The remainder will be shared by RCOC and Oakland Township. The prime contractor for the project is M.L. Chartier of Fair Haven, MI.
The Adams/Gunn intersection carries about 15,160 vehicles per day. Safety statistics from the Federal Highway Administration document that roundabouts increase traffic capacity by 30 to 50 percent and reduce serious-injury crashes by 75 percent and traffic fatalities by 90 percent.

Additionally, beginning approximately June 24, RCOC will perform preventative maintenance work on two bridges on Adams Road north of the Gunn intersection (between Gunn and Orion roads). During the bridge work, southbound Adams Road will be closed between Gunn and Orion Roads, though access to the homes along the road will be maintained.
The bridge work is expected to be completed by early July.
