The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects construction to widen the Sashabaw Road turnarounds from just south of Bow Pointe Drive to Sheffler Drive in Independence Twp. to begin Monday, April 22.
The approximately $266,000 project is funded through a competitive grant provided by the Michigan Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF). The grant was awarded to RCOC and Independence Township for improving Sashabaw Road to better accommodate truck traffic related to the Magneti Marelli manufacturing business that provides automotive exterior lighting and exhaust systems for Fiat Chrysler.
The project includes:
- Replacing and widening the Sashabaw Road turnarounds at Bow Pointe and North Private drives
- Paving the turnarounds with concrete
- Improving the northbound Sashabaw right-turn lane into Bow Pointe Drive
- Constructing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps
During construction, Sashabaw Road will remain open to traffic. Additionally, all business access will be maintained throughout the project. One turnaround will be open at all times while the other is under construction.
The contractor for the project is Angelo Iafrate of Warren.
The project is expected to be complete in late June.
