To maintain the quality of the natural environment that supports quality of life in our communities and the health and safety of the public, the Oakland County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, in cooperation with the Road Commission for Oakland County and various local governments in Oakland County, will be treating the invasive plant Phragmites that is growing along major roads rights-of-way in September and October 2018. Phragmites is a grass that grows in wetlands and can reach heights of 15 feet or more, leading to safety and environmental problems. This large grass forms dense stands that block views at intersections, impede water access, impair drainage in ditches and streams, damage road infrastructure, crowd out habitat for wildlife and native plants and can cause hot, damaging fires if ignited.
Areas planned for treatment include Oakland County primary, local and natural beauty roads in Addison Township, Auburn Hills, Brandon Township, Commerce Township, Groveland Township, Highland Township, Holly Township, Village of Holly, Independence Township, Keego Harbor, Lake Angelus, Lake Orion, Village of Leonard, Milford Township, Village of Milford, Novi, Oakland Township, Orchard Lake Village, Orion Township, Ortonville, Pontiac, Rose Township, Springfield Township, Sylvan Lake, Village of Clarkston, Walled Lake, Waterford Township, West Bloomfield Township, White Lake, Wixom and Wolverine Lake.

DEQ permitting restrictions, national holidays, and/or weather conditions may influence the timing of treatments. The treatment schedule is approximate. Please watch your property if you are adjacent to planned treatment areas for the posting of the 8.5x11 inch, yellow signs. The signs will indicate the date of the treatment, the products used, and any restrictions on the use of treated property.
This notice is being circulated in accordance with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) procedures. Below is a list of herbicides that may be applied and the associated use restrictions. On the day of treatment, signs will be posted that indicate what products were used and specific restrictions that apply:

Method of Application:
All applications will be foliar applied by vehicular mounted hand spray gun equipment. The herbicide will be tank mixed.
Re-Entry Restrictions:
Do not enter treated areas until the spray has dried.
This advance notification is a requirement that a commercial applicator must make before a broadcast or foliar application of pesticides for community or right-of-way pest management to persons who own or reside on property that is within the target area or to their authorized representatives. Prior notification shall be provided by the commercial applicator or his or her agent.
The chemicals used for Aquatic Nuisance Control are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Michigan Department of Agriculture. The potential for damage to fish and other non-target organisms is minimal provided that the product is used as directed on the product label and the permit. To minimize the possible effects on health and the environment, the treated area is restricted for the above purposes.
