The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will close eastbound Maple Road between Farmington and Orchard Lake roads in West Bloomfield Township beginning April 3 for the final phase of a two-year construction project that began in 2016.
The westbound lane of Maple Road between Farmington and Orchard Lake roads will remain open to traffic. Business and residential property access will be maintained throughout the project.
The detour for eastbound traffic is Drake Road to Walnut Lake Road to Orchard Lake Road and vice versa.
Motorists can expect heavy delays, and westbound traffic is advised to also use the detour since this segment of Maple Road carries approximately 32,000 vehicles daily.
The approximately $6.4 million dollar project is funded with a mix of federal and local dollars. Local funding is shared by RCOC, West Bloomfield Township and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party program).
Phase 1 construction of Maple Road, from Drake to Farmington, was completed in 2016 (including the Farmington Road roundabout resurfacing and pedestrian crossing upgrades).
The final phase of this project includes:
· Rehabilitation and resurfacing of Maple Road from Farmington to Orchard Lake Road
· Addition of continuous center, left-turn lane
· Right-turn lane extensions in several areas
· Paved-shoulder widening
· Improved drainage
· Curb and gutter installation
· Traffic-signal modernization
· Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian crosswalks
The contractor for the project is Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township.
