The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Lathrup Village, will host a public information meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15, about the planned 2024 resurfacing of Southfield Road, 11 Mile Road to 12 Mile Road.

The meeting is from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Lathrup Village Hall, 27400 Southfield Road. The meeting will be open-house format -- there will not be a formal presentation. RCOC staff will be present to answer questions throughout the meeting.

  • Grinding off the asphalt on Southfield Road and repaving with asphalt.
  • Grinding off the asphalt on the first 400 feet of 12 Mile Road west of Southfield Road and repaving with asphalt.
  • Reconstructing some side street approaches.
  • Repairing curbs and gutters and improving storm sewers and drainage.
  • Installing pedestrian crosswalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Upgrading SMART bus stops.
  • Modernizing the traffic signals at the Goldengate/Sunset Drive intersection with Southfield Road.
  • Installing pedestrian-activated traffic signals at California Drive and Wiltshire Boulevard intersections with Southfield Road.

Utility and tree removal work is expected to take place in late 2023 and early 2024. Construction is expected to start in the late spring/early summer of 2024 and conclude in the fall of 2024.

Access to businesses within the construction zone will be maintained during the work. Throughout the project, Southfield Road will have one lane open in each direction.

12 Mile Road, Evergreen Road to Greenfield will completely close during weekends for part of the project, with the date to be announced. A detour will be posted.

Additionally, the following partial closures will take place during separate construction phases with dates to be announced:

Stage 1 (approximately three weeks):

  • 11 Mile Road, both north and south of I-696, will close at the west side of Southfield Road. Westbound 11 Mile traffic will only be able to turn right or left at Southfield Road.
  • Both eastbound and westbound I-696 ramps onto Southfield Road will close.
