The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will open Big Beaver Road between Woodward Avenue (M-1) and Adams Road today (Oct. 18), after 6 p.m. today. The re-opening is approximately two weeks ahead of schedule.
“Big Beaver Road is a major corridor connecting east and west Oakland County, including linking communities west of Woodward with many destinations in Troy,” said RCOC Commissioner Greg Jamian. “The improvements should help traffic flow move more efficiently; especially with the addition of a center left-turn lane between Woodward and Brookdale.”
The $4.65 million project also included:
• Replacement of dual culverts with a precast concrete culvert over the Rouge River
• Reconstruction of the road
• Improved drainage
• New retaining walls
• Concrete curb and gutter
• New guardrail
The road has been closed since April 12, first for major utility relocation, with construction beginning in late May.
“We greatly appreciate the public’s patience during the road closure. Closing the road helped ensure the project’s early completion,” Commissioner Jamian added.
The contractor for the project is Angelo Iafrate of Warren. For more information on the project, including Workzone Camera footage and photos, visit: the Big Beaver Road page on the RCOC Website (http://www.rcocweb.org/271/Big-Beaver-Road).
Big Beaver Road carries approximately 25,000 vehicles daily.
