RCOC TO HOST PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING SEPT. 28 ABOUT PLANNED BALDWIN RD./CLARKSTON RD. ROUNDABOUT

Public information Meeting image

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Orion Township, will host a public information meeting on Thursday, Sept. 28, about the planned 2024 construction of a roundabout at the Baldwin Road/Clarkston Road intersection in the township.

The meeting is from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Orion Township Hall, 2323 Joslyn Road, Orion Township. It will be in the Dragon Community Room. The meeting will be open-house format -- there will not be a formal presentation, but RCOC staff will be present to answer questions throughout the meeting.

The approximately $3.2 million project is funded mainly by federal dollars, including federal Highway Safety Program dollars, along with RCOC and Orion Township providing matching funds.

            The project includes:

  • Construction of a modern roundabout at the Baldwin Road/Clarkston Road intersection.
  • Improvements to storm sewers and drainage.
  • Construction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant crosswalks at the roundabout that will connect to the existing pedestrian pathways.
  • Installing Hight-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian crosswalk signals.
  • Placement of curbs and gutters and decorative concrete.
  • Installation of intersection lighting.

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2024, with the intersection closing to traffic. Access to homes and businesses within the construction zone will be maintained during the work. The project will conclude in the late fall of 2024.

The detour route for through traffic will be: Indianwood Road to Joslyn Road to Waldon Road to Baldwin Road to Maybee/Clintonville Road to Sashabaw Road and vice versa.

RCOC is also requesting public input to recognize and address the temporary use of Friendship Park during this project, which includes slope grading and alignment of sidewalks at the northeast corner of the intersection. RCOC proposes a “temporary non-conforming use” of Friendship Park as regulated by Section 4(f) of the United States Department of Transportation Act of 1966. Comments and concerns can be submitted to the RCOC Design Division at design@rcoc.org, by phone at 877-858-4804, or in person during the September 28 public meeting. The deadline for comments or concerns is Friday, Oct. 13, 2023.

Anyone wishing to attend the meeting who requires special accommodations in accordance with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Title VI, including those requiring language assistance, should call RCOC at 248-645-2000 and ask to be directed to the RCOC Engineering Department to submit your request. The Road Commission will provide such services free of charge, with reasonable advanced notice.
