ROAD COMMISSION SEEKING FULL-TIME ROAD WORKERS (LABORER/CDL-A TRUCK DRIVER POSITIONS)

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is looking to hire full-time laborers/truck drivers to augment its staff for the winter season. The positions require a Michigan commercial driver’s license with an air-brake endorsement (CDL-A). 

The minimum probationary wage for the position is $20 per hour. The minimum hourly rate increases to $22 after six months and $24.96 per hour upon completing probation. The increases in pay are performance-based.  

            “The winter season will be here soon. These are the front-line workers who handle the day-to-day maintenance necessary to keep our roads open and in good shape,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar stated. “This is truly a great way to be a vital part of your community and to make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of your neighbors every day. We are staffing and planning now for the seasonal needs ahead of us.”

            The positions include a comprehensive benefits package with health insurance and employer-paid dental and life insurance; paid holidays, vacation and sick time; a tuition-reimbursement program; and a retirement package for vested employees, among other benefits. 

In addition to the CDL-A, a high school diploma or GED equivalent is required, and anyone accepting this position must be willing to accept placement at any of the six RCOC garage locations across Oakland County (Milford Twp., Springfield Twp., Orion Twp., Waterford Twp., Southfield and Troy) and be willing to work their fair share of overtime.

Examples of some of the work the employees in this position perform include:

            - Winter operations (salting, plowing)

- Traffic control

            - Pothole patching

            - Roadside cleanup

            - Working with basin and pavement-repair crews and tree crews

            - Operating large vehicles (greater than 26,000 lb.) 

            - Servicing and maintaining equipment

            - Operating heavy construction equipment such as an excavator, grader, vactor, loader, etc.

 

All work is done collaboratively, safely and efficiently and must be performed in a citizen-oriented manner in accordance with all rules, regulations and policies.
