Farr Street Culvert Replacements

PUBLIC MEETING:

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Commerce Township, will host a public meeting for the planned replacement of culverts on Farr Street, Broadway Street to Elkin Street in the township.  There will be no formal presentations, but RCOC staff will be present to answer questions. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Commerce Elementary School, 520 Farr Street, Commerce Township.  

Anyone wishing to attend the meeting who requires special accommodations in accordance with the provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Title VI, including those requiring language assistance, should call the RCOC at 248-645-2000 and ask to be directed to the Engineering Department to submit your request. The Road Commission will provide such services free of charge with reasonable advanced notice.

PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT:

RCOC is requesting public input to recognize and address concerns about the temporary use of  Mill Race Park during this project, which includes slope grading and alignment of the sidewalks on the northeast corner of the intersection. RCOC is proposing a "temporary non-conforming use" of Friendship Park as regulated under Section (4)f of the United States Department of Transportation Act of 1966. Please submit comments by Friday, October 20, 2023.

PROJECT INFORMATION:

The approximately $1.25 million project is paid for with State Local Bridge Funds, the RCOC and Commerce Township. 

The project includes:

  • Removal of two failing nine-foot metal culverts beneath Farr Street and replacing them with two new culverts.
  • The new culverts will be longer, allowing for future sidewalk installation on the north side of the street.
  • Repaving Farr Street from Broadway Street to Elkin Street with asphalt.
  • Placing curbs and gutters in the are of the culvert.
  • Drainage improvements.
  • New pathway access to Mill Race Park. 
  • Tree removal (expected March of 2024).
  • Minor utility (expected in the spring of 2024).

TIMEFRAME/CONTRACTOR/ROAD CLOSURE:

PROJECT START:  July, To Be Announced (TBA)

PROJECT EXPECTED COMPLETION: September TBA

ROAD CLOSURE: Yes, residential and business access maintained east and west of the closure.

DETOUR: Carroll Lake Road to West Commerce Road to North Commerce Road,  back to Farr Street and vice versa.
