OVERLAY PROJECT ON WILLIAMS LAKE RD BETWEEN PONTIAC LAKE & ELIZABETH LAKE RDS TO BEGIN ON MAY 15

Road-Construction-Ahead

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will begin a preservation overlay project on Williams Lake Road between Pontiac Lake and Elizabeth Lake roads in Waterford Township on May 15.

The road will remain open to traffic during the project; however, motorists can expect delays as flaggers will be directing traffic. Residential and business access will also be maintained throughout the project.

The $586,500 project is funded by RCOC utilizing additional fuel-tax and vehicle-registration-fee revenue that was approved by the Michigan Legislature in 2016.

This is a pilot project known as a “Texas Overlay,” which involves three methods to improve the road condition including micro-milling as the first step followed by “chip and seal.” Chip and seal is a process that utilizes a thin coat of heated asphalt liquid that is sprayed on the road surface followed by placement of small gravel (“chips”). The excess gravel is swept, and the final step is placing hot-mix asphalt on the surface.

  • The 1.1 mile project includes:
  • Micro-milling road surface
  • Chip and sealing the road
  • Capping the road with an asphalt overlay
  • Paving three-foot shoulders along the road

The project is expected to be complete by late June. Williams Lake Road carries approximately 20,000 vehicles daily.

The prime contractor for the project is Cadillac Asphalt of Clarkston, Michigan.
